8th grade ELA

Description of Course

English Language Arts is the study of reading, spelling, literature, and composition for the purpose of developing reading and writing skills. Through studies and practice in reading comprehension, synthesizing information, analyzing literature, and applying reasoning, and problem-solving, students increase their ability to effectively understand literature. Also, through practice in using conventions of language, punctuation, and proofreading strategies, students increase their ability to write competently.  The major goal of English Language Arts is to create better readers and writers who can effectively communicate and express ideas in oral and written language. These skills are crucial to every course or job a student will ever engage in throughout his/her life.

Textbook

The textbooks that we use for our English studies are Language Network, Elements of Language, and Grammar, Usage, and Mechanics Book. The textbooks that we use for our Reading practice are Literature and Interactive Reader and Writer. These books are provided to students to complete in class activities. When homework is assigned, your child’s teacher will make copies from the aforementioned books or provide materials from other sources for your child to complete the assignment at home. In addition to the textbooks, we also utilize practice materials from a wide variety of sources such as skill cards, teacher resource books, CD-Roms, practice tests, etc.
